Maleficent: Pros and Cons

***NOTE: THE FOLLOWING BELOW IS BASED SOLELY ON THE BLOGGER'S PREFERENCE AND RESPECTS THE VIEWS OF OTHER PEOPLE. SPOILER ALERT!***
WHAT I DON'T LIKE

It's complete deviation from the classic toon. I know they've mentioned, "Don't believe the fairytale", but still, they could have just made something that is not almost completely altering the whole situation of the past, for it will leave the viewers, who have watched Sleeping Beauty, a great confusion, and some audience, greatly disappointed.

Maleficent, Lara Croft or Salt? In the latter part of the film, where Maleficent was reunited with her mighty wings, her sophisticated black robe and outfit was transformed into an action-packed body suit, which appeared very similar to the Baroness of G.I. Joe. I mean if it's fantasy and a fairy tale make it more relative. Kids might find this cool, but young teenagers on-wards might find this way off.

( Baroness- G.I. Joe)
Diaval, or Sam Riley's role is just an accessory, but given lots of screen time. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have given Sam Riley much screen time, but they should have justified the amount of screen time given to him. What do I mean? They should have given his role a very important function other than being the second voice and being used as a shape-shifter, so that in the end he will be used as the dragon that was supposed to be Maleficent. His character was "Maleficent can do that. Why does it have to be you?" I hope his role was that of something Maleficent cannot do. Why do they change the original concept? It is to lessen Maleficent't "being evil" as kids are scared of fire-breathing dragons and find them as villains.

Maleficent has POWER, hasn't she? She has  freaking power! She could even shape-shift Diaval (the crow) into different animals. Why haven't she applied that to herself? Just wondering.

WHAT I LIKE

True love: Maternal love. Maleficent was portrayed as the beloved godmother of Aurora. Throughout the princess' years, she knows Maleficent has been watching her all along and has been taking good care of her. As the movie proceeds, Maleficent and Aurora's relationship grew and evolved into something that of mother-and-child. In the end, the true love is revealed to be as a mother's unconditional love.

Prince, debunked. The prince's kiss failed. This shows that "True love" doesn't necessarily implicate that you have to be kissed by a handsome and well-mannered prince. I know they have this theme similar to Frozen, but this time it's more relative. Not all siblings would actually do that for each other, but a mother will always have her eyes on her child, just as what Maleficent promised while Aurora was in a deep-sleep.

Angelina Jolie's acting. She appeared very motherly in this film, which makes the maternal love to have more impact. She showed character flexibility and the difference between her "soft side" and "hard side", for me, is clearly and neatly portrayed.

OVER ALL,
Maleficent has the pendulum swaying from right to left. The chances of the movie being preferred by many is highly subjective, for it will make you weigh the impact of both positive and negative. Personally, I have listed lots of negative than of the positive, but the maternal impact of the film is very strong. As a daughter, it made me recall how unconditional a mother's love is for her child.

Your truly,
ReiPeace :D

  1. Oh! Thanks a lot for sharing this post here. I guess, it is important that kids watch good shows. My daughter loves to watch movies like this and I haven’t seen any kind of changed behaviour in her as well. It is probably because of the good shows by Andy Yeatman that she watches at times.
